Our Why
We love this farm. It's our home, our work, our life. It's our past, our present and our future. This place is at the heart of our family's story, our legacy to future generations. We want to create opportunities for our family and future generations.
Our How
We aim to create a positive legacy for future generations of Tommerups by improving the farm and developing a viable & dynamic farm and agritourism business that celebrates our story and reflects our family values.
Tommerup's Dairy Farm is a genuine working farm. Dave, Kay and their (almost) adult children, Harry & Georgia, work together to run the 200 acre family property. Although predominantly a dairy farm operation supplying Norco Co-operative, the farm is now diversifying to become a mixed farm business with our farm direct produce including milk fed free range pigs, Rose veal, pasture raised lamb added to our existing Jersey milking herd.
Our milk is supplied to Norco Co-operative as it has been for more than 30 years. Norco is a farmer owned co-operative and we're very proud to be part of this Australian co-operative. 5 generations of Dave's family have produced milk commercially on this beautiful property. What began with selling cream to the Logan and Albert Dairy Co-operative in Beaudesert with the separated milk going to feed pigs, moving to bulk milk sales firstly to the L and A Co-op and later to Norco, has now come full circle with some of our precious milk used to nourish our family of heritage breed pigs.
A small portion of our milk will become exceptionally flavoured artisan dairy products, right here on the farm with the addition of an on-farm Creamery. Milk will once again be hand separated on our farm, the leftovers used to feed our pigs and the cream of the crop reserved for our handcrafted dairy delicacies.
Situated in the picturesque Kerry Valley, part of the Lost World region of the Scenic Rim, our farm offers visitors the chance to soak up the experience of an authentic working farm or just relax in the beautiful surroundings. Our guests are welcome to join us to milk our dairy herd, feed our menagerie of farm animals, enjoy the Albert River & Duck Creek which both run through the property or take a walk around our farm to catch a glimpse of the many & varied wildlife on the farm.
Choose to stay in our rustic farm stay cottage, join us for one of our special farm events and purchase farm direct produce and meat or bring your students to our Farm School outdoor classroom for a farm experience like no other.
Our Family History
This property was selected by Dave's Great Great Grandfather, Mathew Horan, in 1874. His Great Grandmother, Katie Horan, married Hannibal Tommerup, and in 1917 the partnership of Horan and Tommerup was formed. This partnership still exists today and is run by Dave & Kay. The Homestead on the property was built in 1888 and was the first sawn timber home in the district. Its detached kitchen was relocated to its current location in 1945 and used as a worker's cottage. This Cottage and The Homestead offer our farm visitors a chance to make their own memories in these historic homes, now used a farm holiday accommodation.
There has been much research done into the history of the Horan and Tommerup families and there are several books regarding this at The Cottage and The Homestead for your reading pleasure.
